Download of the Day: Cooliris Previews (IE/Firefox/Safari)

Posted by 1337g33k on November 29, 2006

Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari only: Preview search results, embedded images, YouTube videos and more just by mousing over them with the Cooliris Previews 2.0 browser extension.

Previously limited to Google, eBay, Craigslist and a few other sites, Cooliris now works just about everywhere. Simply mouse over any link or thumbnail image, then point to the little Cooliris icon that appears next to it. In a second or two you’ll see a pop-up window containing the page, image, or even video. This isn’t just a screenshot, however; you can actually play the video or interact with the page, clicking links, filling out forms, etc.

Best. Extension. Ever? It might just be. Cooliris changes the way you interact with the Web, and for the better. Cooliris Previews 2.0 is free for Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari browsers. — Rick Broida

iHome iH21 wireless speaker system

Posted by 1337g33k on November 29, 2006

Engadget: iHome’s already been busy this morning and now we can add the iH21 to their product catalog. The kit is said to transmit iPod music anywhere in the house to that “water-resistant” speaker. Get it? You can leave the iPod docked-up, far(ish) away from your filthy azz while streaming music to the speaker in the hot mustiness of nausea you call bathroom. Now, we’re not sure what technology they’re packing (WiFi, Bluetooth, PowerLine, etc) but we’ve got a sneakin’ suspicion these are Bluetooth-equipped. Hell with EDR, A2DP and AVRCP profiles, that 32 foot transmission range (unobstructed) should be just about right with the remote. But we’ll wait for these to be unveiled at CES before getting too riled up.

“Robo-Rentacop” Patrols Tokyo Shopping Malls.

Posted by 1337g33k on November 29, 2006

Japanese company Sohgo Security Services unveiled a new robot called Reborg-Q to patrol shopping malls in Tokyo. Pink Tentacle has the story:

While on patrol, four cameras mounted in the robot’s head and shoulders record video, and its sensors detect the presence of humans, water leaks and fire. When the robot encounters something suspicious, it alerts a computer in the security room and sends video. Human security guards view the video footage sent by the robot and determine how to respond.

digg: While online video viewers remain a minority, three quarters of those polled in a recent survey said they now watch more TV online or on mobiles than they did a year ago. Approximately 43 percent of users who watch video on the Internet or via mobile device at least once a week said they watch less traditional TV as a result.

Download of the Day: Undelete Plus (Windows)

Posted by 1337g33k on November 28, 2006

Lifehacker:

undelete%20plus.png

Windows only: Freeware program Undelete Plus lets you recover your deleted files on your Windows box.

Undelete Plus scans your hard drive for all those files that have been deleted in Windows but haven’t been overwritten on your hard drive. We’ve covered this territory before, but Undelete Plus has a better interface and tools than previously mentioned Restoration, making it easy to sort your results by filetype and set up filters to help narrow things down significantly. Alternatively, Undelete Plus also lets you wipe out files that are still available but that you want to be gone forever, kind of like the Windows File Shredder. Share your favorite file recovery method in the comments. — Adam Pash
