Photoshop how-to site Photoshopsupport.com shows you how to make
objects disappear from photos using Photoshop’s Vanishing Point tool.

This is actually an excerpt from one of the site’s video tutorials.
The three-minute clip demonstrates the use of the Vanishing Point tool,
which, when combined with the clone tool, enables you to quickly and
easily scrub almost anything out of a photo. The results are quite
impressive, especially the way the lines in the floorboards stay
completely intact. Worthwhile viewing for anyone learning Photoshop
(specifically, Photoshop CS2). — Rick Broida

Launchy - I am in love

31 01 2007

I have found the Windows sister of the Mac’s Quicksilver program, thank God! It’s called Launchy, and boy is it one sweet freeware app, perfect for my work computer which has to be Windows. From the site:

“Launchy is a free windows utility designed to help you forget about
your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.
Launchy
indexes the programs in your start menu and can launch your documents,
project files, folders, and bookmarks with just a few keystrokes!”

"Play!" Symphony plays Morrowind/Oblivion Theme

30 01 2007

I’ve been following this orchestral tour called “Play!” for some time now, hoping beyond all hope that they’d come to a nearby city (they still have not).  The premise is that a full symphony plays some of the best themes in video game canon. The primary reason I want to see them is to hear a live, full-orchestra version of the Elder Scrolls theme, a piece that is every bit as good as anything from Lord of the Rings.

I was pleased beyond measure when I saw someone had posted some bootleg clips on Google Video. Here’s the Morrowind/Oblivion Elder Scrolls theme. More game clips are available if you click through to the Google video page.

Download of the Day: Paint.NET 3 (Windows)

30 01 2007
Lifehacker:

paint.net.png

Windows only: Freeware app Paint.NET is a powerful, lightweight image editing alternative to Photoshop and GIMP.

We’ve mentioned Paint.NET on a couple of occasions,
but they’ve released a new version, and since it’s my favorite
low-power editor, I wanted to give it a mention. If you need to do
basic/intermediate image editing from time to time, but you don’t need
the horsepower of Photoshop or GIMP, Paint.NET is a wonderful
alternative. Version 3 adds, among other things, a tabbed interface for
managing several projects in one window. Paint.NET is freeware, Windows
only. Requires .NET 2.0. — Adam Pash

Verizon passed on exclusive iPhone deal

29 01 2007
Idiots…..

iLounge: “Verizon Wireless rejected Apple’s offer to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone

almost two years ago due to Apple’s demands. According to Jim Gerace, a
Verizon Wireless vice president, Apple wanted a percentage of the
monthly service fees, say over where the iPhone could be sold, and
control of iPhone customers. “We said no. We have nothing bad to say
about the Apple iPhone,” Gerace said. “We just couldn’t reach a deal
that was mutually beneficial.”

The Verizon executive said only Apple Stores and Verizon stores
would have sold the iPhone, much like the current deal with
AT But Gerace said that would have put Verizon’s
distribution partners, such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy, at a
disadvantage. Gerace also said that Apple wanted sole discretion over
whether to replace or repair a malfunctioning iPhone. “They would have
been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we
would have almost had to take a back seat… on hardware and service
support,” Gerace said.”

Which Science Fiction Writer Are You?

Apparently, I am:

Hal Clement

(Harry C. Stubbs)

A quiet and underrated master of “hard science” fiction who, among other things, foresaw integrated circuits back in the 1940s.
