A Chinese Virtual Currency Challenges the Yuan

30 03 2007

Cryptonomicon, here we come….

Slashdot: “A Wall Street Journal article reports that China’s fastest-rising
currency isn’t the yuan. It’s the QQ coin — online play money created
by marketers to sell such things as virtual flowers for instant-message
buddies, cellphone ringtones and magical swords for online games. In
recent weeks, the QQ coin’s real-world value has risen as much as 70%.
It’s the most extreme case of a so-called virtual currency blurring the
boundaries between the online and real worlds — and challenging legal
limits. A Chinese Internet company called Tencent Holdings Ltd.
designed the payment system in 2002 to allow its 233 million regular
registered users to shop for treats in its virtual world. Virtual
currencies are in use in many countries — but nowhere have they taken
root more deeply than in China.”

U2 get to work on new album

30 03 2007

Interference: “U2 have announced that they have begun work on their new album. Guitarist The Edge says that the band are working with producer Rick
Rubin on the follow up to 2004’s ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’.

The Edge told Rolling Stone: “We’re working on new songs and getting
lost in the music. I don’t think we’re going to try and think too much
about what we’re going to do with it yet, we’re just going to do a lot
of writing and just see what gives.

“We’re giving ourselves the luxury of just working on the songs. There’s some amazing things coming through.

WiPeer (Windows)

30 03 2007

Lifehacker:

wipeer.png

Windows only: WiPeer sets up wireless peer-to-peer networks between PCs, no router, access point or internet required.

You can use these ad-hoc networks to share files, chat and even play
games with other WiPeer users. Suppose, for instance, you’re at a lunch
meeting with some co-workers. There’s no Wi-Fi network to be found, but
you need to share some files. Instead of passing a USB flash drive
around the table, you could connect two or more machines via WiPeer.
Easy-peasy.

I was able to get the program up and running on two notebooks in
about three minutes, and it took only one minute after that to figure
out file sharing. This is an ingenious little application that solves
the problem of trying to link up two or more PCs without the usual
networking hassles.

WiPeer is free. It requires Windows XP and Microsoft .NET 2.0. Mac and Linux versions are in the works.

Download of the Day: Send To Toys (Windows)

30 03 2007

Lifehacker:

send%20to%20toys.png

Windows
only: Freeware application Send To Toys lets you customize the hell out
of your irregularly used (if I’m any indication, that is) Send to
context menu.

Send To Tools adds a slew of useful defaults you can send an item to
(like the clipboard, command prompt, a mail recipient, or any folder
you choose). If you’re sending a file to another folder, you can choose
to copy it, move it, or just create a shortcut. Allowing for quick
customization of pretty much every menu item in the Send To menu, this
is clearly a program built by someone who decided it was time to get
better use out of a potentially useful menu. (To be honest, the only
Send to item I ever use now is the Compressed (zipped) Folder command.)
If you’re already a big fan of the default Send To menu, let us know
how you use it in the comments. — Adam Pash

Early Adopter Download of the Day: Minimo (Windows Mobile)

30 03 2007

Lifehacker:

minimo.png

Windows Mobile only: Previously mentioned freeware app Minimo is a mobile browser based on the same wonderful Mozilla technologies that bring us Firefox.

Minimo’s come a long way since we last posted about it, and its
strong feature set includes pretty good javascript/AJAX support and
tabbed browsing that looks and feels like regular Firefox tabs. This
little browser is still very young, and support for a lot of javascript
and AJAX may end up being a bit too much for what you Windows Mobile
device can handle while remaining snappy (at least it was for mine -
Google Maps did work, but it was a little jumpy), but this is a nice
looking mobile browser you might want to keep your eyes on. Like
Firefox, Minimo claims to have extension support, but as far as I could
find, there currently aren’t any extensions available. Either way, it’s
a definite step up from the mobile version of Internet Explorer if
that’s what you’re browsing with on your mobile device. — Adam Pash

Vista Can Be Taken Down by an Animated Cursor

30 03 2007

Ok, this is just too classic…

Keznews: “In what could be the most embarrassing exploit to impact Windows Vista
since its commercial launch in January, security engineers at McAfee’s
Avert Labs confirmed today - and posted the video to prove - that the
operating system can be caused to enter an interminable
crash-restart-crash loop, by means of a buffer overflow triggered by
nothing more than a malformed animated cursor file.”

Bono Not A Jedi Knight

30 03 2007

Too funny….

story.bono.knight.ap.jpg

CNN: “Irish rock star and global humanitarian Bono became a knight of the
British empire Thursday — and joked that his youngest son thought he
was about to join the Jedi order instead.

“You have permission to
call me anything you want — except sir, all right? Lord of lords, your
demigodness, that’ll do,” Bono, 46, told reporters after he was crowned
a “Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”
in an informal, laugh-filled ceremony in the Dublin home of British
Ambassador David Reddaway.

Reddaway paid tribute to Bono’s work
as a campaigner against poverty and disease in Africa — but first
asked whether Bono was disappointed that becoming a knight no longer
involved a sword or kneeling.

“Please, I wasn’t expecting you to kneel,” Bono said, his hand on the ambassador’s shoulder.

Accompanying
Bono were his wife, Ali, their four children — Jordan, 17; Eve, 15;
Elijah, 7, and John, 5 — and two of his U2 bandmates: guitarist The
Edge and bassist Adam Clayton, both of whom were English-born and
retain British citizenship.

Bono’s two boys sat cross-legged on
the floor throughout the ceremony. Bono said John was disappointed that
his dad was not presented with a Star Wars light saber.

“He thought I was becoming a Jedi,” Bono said.
