A site called Free Lens Hoods offers–you guessed it–free lens hoods for your SLR camera.
In case you’re not familiar with them, a lens hood helps prevent
glare and lens flare. It’s basically a petal-shaped plastic ring that
clips onto the end of your lens. In this case, however, it’s a printed
piece of paper, which can accomplish the same goal. The site carries
custom hoods for upwards of a hundred different lenses, including
models from Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sigma. Just print the hood that
matches your lens (you’ll need A2, A3, or A4 paper), carefully cut
along the diagram and then secure it to your lens using a rubber band.
Presto: free, lightweight, easily replaceable lens hoods.
This
isn’t a particularly new idea (photo pros know that in a pinch you can
just cone a sheet of paper around the lens), but it’s great to see such
meticulously crafted, lens-specific printables. Reminds me of our
recent tip on using a coffee filter to diffuse your camera’s flash. Now if they could just figure out a way to store photos on sugar packets instead of memory cards… — Rick Broida
