IGN: “With all the talk about how there wasn’t going to be any real The Dark Knight
presence at Comic-Con this year, we should have all known that Warner
Bros. wouldn’t let us down entirely. A new viral marketing site for the
film just launched — www.whysoserious.com
– which of course requires some puzzle-solving that will lead to… what
exactly? New images, a trailer, or something else? That’s been the talk
of the bat-geek community all morning.
Well, it looks like the first lead has been uncovered. Not
surprisingly, it’s a new photo of the Joker — Heath Ledger — and he
has a knife at the throat of the new and improved Rachel Dawes (Maggie
Gyllenhaal). Check it:

Boing Boing: “Xeni Jardin:
Oh, alright, soylent green it ain’t. But Pepsi will soon begin
disclosing on Aquafina bottle labels that the beverage is, in fact, no
more than filtered tap water — Aquatappa.
Specifically, the labels will refer to a “Public Water Source.” The
change comes in response to a campaign from a group called Corporate
Responsibility International, and they argue that bottled water is
dangerous to the environment. LAT: Link. CRI’s press release: Link. Reuters: Link.”

Mac only: Single-purpose utility Caffeine disables your Mac’s
screensaver, sleep and screen auto-dimming with one click from the menu
bar. Great for presentations, watching videos or extended discussions
over something on your screen, Caffeine’s much like the
previously-posted Jiggler, but with fewer configuration options – just a single-click setting. Caffeine is a free download for Mac only. Thanks, Tinlad!

The already nicely priced Xbox 360 HD DVD player just got slashed to $179. The new US-only, retail pricing also includes 5 free HD DVD flicks when purchasing the player between August 1st and September 30th — you know, the same time period 300 and Heroes
goes on sale in HD DVD format. Unfortunately, the free titles must be
made from a selection of just 15 pre-selected films which Toshiba
considers “popular.” Nevertheless, the $20 price cut makes the Xbox 360
HD DVD player all the more enticing as an easily hacked, USB-player for HD flicks on your PC.

iLounge: “In its reporting of third quarter results, Apple has revealed that it
sold 270,000 iPhones over the launch period of June 29 and June 30.
This falls slightly short of analysts’ predictions of 300K units, but
should reassure those who questioned the success of the product’s
launch following AT&T’s statement that it had activated only
146,000 iPhones during the same period. In addition, Apple CEO Steve
Jobs said, “iPhone is off to a great start—we hope to sell our one-
millionth iPhone by the end of its first full quarter of sales.”
Apple’s fourth quarter will end on Sept. 29.”

And finally, a reason to buy the PS3…holy moly…
Digg: “Finally we get to lay eyes on what we’ve been wanting to see all this
time: real time Metal Gear Solid 4 game play, from Konami’s Metal Gear
20th Anniversary Party.”
