Watchmen’s Maximum Movie Mode Could Be The Best Blu-Ray Special Feature Yet

Posted by 1337g33k on June 30, 2009

Go watch the clip mentioned in the post…awesome feature…

/Film:

“One of my many complaints about Blu-Ray is that the movie studios have yet to embrace the format and create some cool extra features using the new technology. Disney has done it right in the past. The visual commentary of the Pixar discs is amazing. Today I came across this video preview from the Watchmen Director’s Cut Blu-Ray which shows the Maxium Movie Mode, and I have to say — this might be the coolest Blu-ray feature yet.

Director Zack Snyder actually comes on screen and hosts an incredibly in-depth look at the film, complete with behind the scenes footage, comic to film comparisons, history timelines, trivia, and much more. From this clip alone, it appears like it could be the best Blu-Ray feature I’ve seen thus far, offering a lot more than the usual audio or visual commentary tracks. Now if Warner Bros would quit producing those worthless Blu-ray mini-books, and instead start creating more special features like this for their future releases…Watch a video preview after the jump.

[See the /Film post to watch the awesome Flash video]

Watchmen hits Blu-Ray on July 21st 2009. You can order the Director’s Cut on Amazon for around $23 (the suggested retail price is $35.99).”

Corrupted files for sale to students to buy extra time

Posted by 1337g33k on June 26, 2009

Boing Boing: “Corrupted-Files.com sells pre-corrupted files ($5.95, on sale for $3.95 until June 30) in a variety of formats. The target market is students who blew their assignment deadline and need an excuse.

Step 1: After purchasing a file, rename the file e.g. Mike_Final-Paper.

Step 2: Email the file to your professor along with your “here’s my assignment” email.

Step 3: It will take your professor several hours if not days to notice your file is “unfortunately” corrupted. Use the time this website just bought you wisely and finish that paper!!!

Note: The only difference between each Word file is its file size, because it will look a bit odd if your 10 page term paper is only 1k in size! Yes, we thought of everything! We guarantee and stand by our product!”

Iran Tries To Pacify Protesters With Lord of The Rings Marathon

Posted by 1337g33k on June 26, 2009

Slashdot: “Iranian state television’s Channel Two is playing a Lord of the Rings marathon in an attempt to keep people inside watching hobbits and not protesting in the streets. Normally, people in Tehran are treated to one or two Hollywood movies a week, but with recent events the government hopes that sitting through a nine-hour trilogy will take the fight out of most of the protesters. Perhaps this was not the best choice in films if you want your people not to believe that “even the smallest person can change the course of the future.”

Windows 7 official pricing announced, limited pre-orders start tomorrow

Posted by 1337g33k on June 25, 2009

Good God!!

Engadget:

“Microsoft just laid out the Windows 7 pricing grid for us, and here’s the big takeaway: Vista and XP users will need to pony up $119.99, $199.99, or $219.99 on October 22 to score their Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate upgrade, and those of you who want a full retail disc will need to roll up with $199.99, $299.99, or $319.99 respectively. It’s not quite that simple, though: starting tomorrow, June 26, you’ll be able to pre-order upgrades at much cheaper prices — $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional, just as we’d heard — but pre-orders will be strictly limited in number and are expected to sell out quickly. Obviously we’d prefer it if final pricing was $49 and $99 for everyone, but it’s not a bad start, especially since participating manufacturers will be offering cheap / free upgrades to 7 on new computers sold after tomorrow with Vista as well.

Oh, and don’t you worry about scoring a place in line, because we’re here to help: later today we’ll be giving away 100 codes that guarantee a pre-order spot at the discounted prices, and you’ll be able to share the code with two friends. You’ll have to act fast, though — the codes will only be valid for 48 hours. Keep your eyes peeled for our recession antidote post around noon EST, and get your clicky-fingers ready.

Update: Looks lke we’ve got our first participating manufacturer — HP machines sold after tomorrow will receive free upgrades to 7, and we’re hearing Sony will announce a similar offer soon. We’ll be keeping a full list of announcements as the day goes on, check back later for more.”

Your iTunes For Comics? Here It Is (Maybe)

Posted by 1337g33k on June 22, 2009

i09:

“While publishers like IDW and Dark Horse have had luck releasing digital versions of their comics for the iPhone recently, many publishers have wondered whether a one-stop digital comic store would ever be created. And then Longbox was announced.

Longbox, which will be made available as a free download later this year by Quicksilver Software, was announced at this weekend’s HeroesCon in North Carolina. Described as “a digital comics platform similar to iTunes,” the software will offer downloadable digital versions of comics by publishers Boom! Studios and Top Cow for just 99 cents (Discussions are being held with other publishers to add their lines). Rantz Hoseley explains the thinking behind the new app:

Everyone’s been talking now for half a decade about the holy grail of digital comics, and how do you solve that problem: How do you make something that everyone gets on board with? And rather than just kind of jump into it willy-nilly, we’ve done a lot of research and actual development on the platform prior to even discussing it with any publishers… Three years ago, when we started doing development, publishers were very, very resistant to it. The majority of publishers wouldn’t even discuss the possibility of it: digital comics are the devil come to steal the milk from our children’s mouths [but t]he difference is that now, every publisher realizes, especially with the increasing cost of monthlies and the declining sales of monthlies, that there has to be a way to expand the market. With every other form of entertainment embracing digital distribution and sales medium, it is very foolhardy to not do likewise.

If you’re wondering whether Longbox would have a problem with your potentially not-incredibly-legal downloaded comics, you’re in luck:

While Longbox has a proprietary secure format, it also reads .cbr and .cbz files. Now, we’re not advocating (and I’ll be kind here) ‘grey market’ digital comic files, but it is ignorant to assume that there isn’t a degree of crossover between people who currently read comics in a .cbr, .cbz file format and people who would want to read comics in a legitimate fashion — especially since so many of those individuals posit that they download .cbr and .cbz because there aren’t ‘legitimate’ versions of these files in digital format. So if Longbox becomes the one stop for people to have their digital comics experience, it’s a very short hop, skip, and jump for people to purchase files there, especially at the price point given.

Color us slightly concerned about talk of “proprietary secure format,” but interested nonetheless. Initially, Longbox will be available for Mac, PC and Linux with a planned release date of September or October; Quicksilver is already looking at adding gaming and mobile platforms.”
