/Film:

“Speaking to MTV News, Keanu Reeves has offered up a slight update on the live-action adaptation of the anime series Cowboy Bebop, in which he’ll be playing the lead role of Spike Spiegel. Reeves mentions that a draft of the script currently exists, penned by Peter Craig, but it’s apparently too elaborate to be filmed. The current script would require a budget of near-Avatar proportions—Reeves mentions that Fox thinks it would cost around $500 million.
Of course, those numbers are pretty speculative. Still, it’s heartening to know that Craig is thinking big with his adaptation of the classic anime series. I would rather he have to strip down a script with elaborate ideas instead of come up with a feeble version of Bebop from the get-go.
The world of Bebop is one dense with a variety of science fiction ideas, from hyper-space to terraforming, all mashed together with noir and Western elements to form a singular universe of cool. There’s no doubt that it’s going to be an expensive film to get off the ground (I’m thinking realistic sets for the Bebop ship, and complicated digital effects in many shots are a must), but it could probably be done for around $100 million.
Unlike many fans of the series, I think Reeves could make for a decent Spike Spiegel if he loosens up a bit (though there are certainly better choices out there). The fate of this project will rest not so much in Reeves, but in whoever they get to direct. My current dream scenario is that Brick and The Brother’s Bloom director Rian Johnson gets involved. With his previous work, he’s proven that he can tackle noir and crime-caper stories— and the fact that he’s also an anime fan certainly doesn’t hurt. Francis Lawrence, who managed to turn Constantine into a fairly fun romp (and did a great job with a good chunk of I Am Legend), is another possibility.
If they got Rachel Weisz signed on as Faye Valentine, and perhaps Terrence Howard as Jet Black, I think they’d be well on their way to a decent adaptation. A Yoko Kanno score couldn’t hurt either. Unlike Akira, Bebop is a series that could work well as a live-action English film, so I’m hoping for the best with this project.”

Boing Boing:
“This breathtaking place is a former Dominican church that was converted into a new retail location for bookseller Selexyz Dominicanen. The architecture firm was Merkx+Girod. From Design Top News:
The store demanded 1,200 sq m of commercial area where only 750 were available.
The initial idea of the client to install a second floor within the church was rejected by the designers, because this would completely destroy the spatial qualities of the church. The solution was found in the creation of a monumental walk-in bookcase spanning several floors and situated a-symmetrically in the church. In doing so the left side of the church remained empty while on the other side customers are lead upstairs in the three- storey ‘Bookflat.’
The ground floor gives room to several different book displays, information desks, magazine-stands and cash registers, all made of standard sheet materials in different colours and surfaces.”

Gizmodo:

“Unsolicited advice: If you insist on robbing people, do so quickly. Grab everything in sight and sprint to Mexico. Because when you gradually steal $36,471 of Netflix DVDs from your day job, someone will eventually notice.
Myles Weathers, a (former) postal sorting facility employee from Springfield, Massachusetts, was busted removing DVDs from Netflix envelopes and placing them in his backpack. That’s a little dumb. What’s really dumb is that Weathers was caught on camera following a Netflix investigation as to why all these people in the area were calling in their DVDs as MIA.
Weathers pleaded guilty to the theft of 3012 DVDs (now recovered) valued at $36,471, and he may get up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced this December. Then again, it could be worse.” [The Smoking Gun via CrunchGear and image]

Oh. My. Dad.
i09:

“A long time ago, Nicolas Cage started a fan war when he was selected to play Tim Burton’s Superman in the final chapter of the boy from Krypton. Test pictures have leaked of the actor in the blue suit.
The movie’s screenplay was written by Kevin Smith and eventually rewritten by Wesley Strick. The whole thing was set to film in 1999. But after spending loads of cash, the studio eventually dropped the movie, which centered on Superman’s demise. This was a good thing, because as much as I enjoy a bad Nic Cage movie, with the yelling on every other emphasis, I don’t think I could handle him as America’s greatest hero.”

Lifehacker:

“Last week we shared a commercial solution for securing your loose pegboard pegs. We’re back to share a cheaper and more effective solution, courtesy of an industrious reader.
Kim disliked Peg Locks, the product we highlighted last week, because they take up two holes on each side of the peg you’re trying to secure, and they never seemed to stay put for his. When he put up new peg boards in his workspace, he decided to use zip ties instead. You can loop them through a single hole and they hold the peg in place with a rock-solid grip.
The downside of course is that you need to have access to the back of the pegboard to use zip ties to secure the organization pegs. Kim overcame this problem by mounting his pegboards in a hinged frame. Most of the time he never needs to access the back, but when some rearranging is needed, he simply flips the whole thing up like a garage door and has access to the back where the zip ties are locked. Check out the link below to see more photos of his setup and additional information.
Have a clever workspace hack? Let’s hear about it in the comments.”
