Atari Releases ‘Missile Command’ for iPhone

24 09 2008

Man, I used to play this non-stop on my Atari when I was a kid…

Touch Arcade:

“On the heels of Super Breakout, Atari has released another classic revamp: Missile Command [App Store].

Defend the cities and don’t let the nukes take out your
missile stations. Missile Command for the iPhone is a true evolution of
Atari’s classic. For the first time ever, players use the multi-touch
feature to launch multiple missiles simultaneously, creating a new
experience for this beloved game. Chose to listen to your tunes while
playing. Two player support.

Atari has updated the graphics and added multi-touch support to this
classic game. The game is priced at $4.99 and is available in the App Store.”

Study Finds Gamers Slim, Fit, Drug-Addled

20 09 2008

1UP:

Fat Gamer“Are
you tired of being stereotyped as fat, snack-munching slob just because
you’re a gamer? Thanks to a new study, you may soon be stereotyped as
slim, fit drug addicts. That’s… way better?

Videogaming247 reports a new study from the University of Southern California, which implies just that. 7,000 players of EverQuest II
were studied, and the results were surprising. The gamers had a body
mass index (BMI) average of 25.2, while Americans in general average at
28. The gamers would also get more exercise than the average American,
with workout sessions coming once or twice a week. Let that settle in
for you: Once a week is more than most Americans.

Of course, the
study isn’t all peaches and candy. The gamers polled were also found to
be more depressed and to have higher occurrence of substance abuse than
non-gamers. We’re not sure exactly how much of this depression and drug
use can be tied to continuing to play EverQuest II four years after World of Warcraft came out.”

Aerosmith Made More Money On Guitar Hero Than Any Albums

19 09 2008

1UP:

Aerosmith
“Activision says Guitar Hero: Aerosmith has earned the band more royalties than any of their albums. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick was quoted by
MTV Multiplayer at the company’s analyst day as saying that the band is
enjoying more than just exposure to new fans and renewed interest of
loyal rockers thanks to the videogame tie-in.

“[Their]
version of Guitar Hero generated far more in revenues than any
Aerosmith album ever has…. Merchandising, concert sales, their
ability to sign a new contract [have] all been unbelievably influenced
by their participation in Guitar Hero.”

Hopefully
Aerosmith’s success with Guitar Hero will encourage other bands to step
up and get involved with videogames. Guitar Hero and Rock Band 2
are already reshaping the radio play in my part of the country. Between
reviving old favorites, showcasing new songs, and earning bands money
hand over fist, videogames are clearly good for the music industry. “

Ultimate arcade cabinet can play just about every game ever

16 09 2008

Me wantey….

DVICE:

cacc-arcade-cabinet.jpg“Now this is an arcade cabinet.
The C-MACC arcade cabinet can play any emulated game on it thanks to
the computer buried inside. Available online, emulated games will let
you play thousands of arcade classics on this machine. But that’s just
the beginning.

Also inside the cabinet is a Playstation 3, an Xbox 360, a Wii, and
a few other consoles, meaning you can play virtually any game ever on
it, whether it’s emulated or not. It’s got custom controls on the
front, and it even has buttons on the side for playing pinball. All
told, this thing cost about $8,900 to build, but it looks like it ended
up being a pretty spectacular piece of equipment.”

Rock Band 2 Has Shipped

11 09 2008

/gamer:

“Just a few more days wannabe rockers, because Rock Band 2 has officially been shipped to stores. And on Saturday we’ll be playing Harmonix’s next blockbuster title. Although, if you don’t own an Xbox 360 than you sir are screwed, because it’s debuting on the 360, and later this year you’ll see it on the PS3, Wii, and PS2.

If you own an Xbox 360 and plan on buying the bundle because you didn’t purchase the first one, than you’re also screwed. The Xbox 360 bundle is coming out later this year along with the other systems.

So, if you own an Xbox 360 and have the Guitar, Drums, and Mic you’ll be rocking on Saturday.”

Left 4 Dead Demo Coming

11 09 2008

IGN: “Valve is going to release a demo for Left 4 Dead, company managing director and co-founder Gabe Newell told Videogamer.com.
While there are virtually no details on the demo, Valve marketing
director Doug Lombardi has confirmed to IGN that it will come out for
both the PC and Xbox 360 prior to the game’s launch.

This isn’t the first time that Valve has allowed fans to play its
multiplayer games before launch. Those that pre-ordered Valve’s The
Orange Box got access to the Team Fortress 2 open beta. When we asked
Lombardi if there was any chance Left 4 Dead would get the same
treatment, he replied, “as for pre-launch access of the game for those
who pre-order (as in the case of TF2/Orange Box), we’re still
finalizing our plans. Please stay tuned for more on that.”

Lombardi did mention that fans can now pre-order the zombie-killing
first-person shooter from one retailer to save $5. Players looking to
pre-order the game from Valve’s Steam service will get the discount,
but will have to wait until October to do so. Players who aren’t
interested in pre-ordering can pick up their copy when the game
launches on November 20.”
