Hey Look, It’s Adobe Photoshop on the iPhone

Posted by 1337g33k on October 9, 2009

Gizmodo:

“Yep, Photoshop on the iPhone. At first glance, it’s not much different from other light iPhone photo editing apps, except it’s tied to their online service, but the effects and interface look above average. And, uh, freeness.”  [iTunes, Thanks Weston!]

Cyclopedia Augmented Reality iPhone 3GS App Drenches Your World In Wikipedia

Posted by 1337g33k on October 8, 2009

Gizmodo:

“App concepts don’t get much simpler than this, or much cooler: Cyclopedia takes Wikipedia’s tens of thousands of geotagged entries, and overlays them onto a live, compass-oriented view of your surroundings.

If this sounds an awful lot like Wikitude, the AR Android app that just can’t seem to eek its way into the App Store, that’s because it is an awful lot like Wikitude—except with a more polished interface, and, well, iPhone support. (Sort of: non-3GSers need not apply). As with Wikitude, firing this thing up around a familiar location won’t really blow your mind, since Wikipedia’s geographic article density is still pretty low.

But if you’re visiting a new place—that is, a place Wikipedia editors care to write about—Cyclopedia ceases to be an AR tech demo, and with adjustable search radii, a top-down map mode and non-geocaches Wikipedia searching, actually starts to be useful. Available now in the App Store for $2; video demo at the source link.” [Chemical Wedding]

Google Sync Updates with Push Gmail Support

Posted by 1337g33k on September 22, 2009

Lifehacker:

“Google Sync, released earlier this year, keeps your calendar and contacts synced between your mobile phone and Google account. Now they’ve added that great, final bit of ultimate sync support by pushing Gmail to your phone.

If you’re sporting an iPhone/iPod Touch, Windows Mobile phone, or Nokia S60 phone, you can now set up Google Sync to actively push your email to your device, ensuring you’re never stuck waiting around for an update to see what’s new or wondering if various work-around alternatives will follow through. From the Official Google Mobile Blog:

Sync works with your phone’s native email application, so there’s no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.

Check out the full post at the link below to see how to get Google Sync if you’re not already a user and how to enable Gmail syncing if you’ve already got a Google Sync account.”

App Showcase: Snap ‘n Tap Lets You Drop A Virtual Marble Into Paper-Drawn Environments

Posted by 1337g33k on September 18, 2009

I love creative ideas like this….

iPhone Alley:

Snap ‘n Tap [App Store, $2.99] lets you interact with elements drawn on paper using a virtual, physics-enabled marble. Put simply, you can draw a maze on paper, snap a photo of it, and guide a virtual marble through it from start to finish. The size of the marble can be adjusted and the app even works with lined paper.

After several minutes of playing with the app, I must say I’m impressed. It’s not developed enough to be a game, but that’s not the developer’s purpose. The ability to have virtual objects interact with hand-drawn elements is just so cool. During one test I used a piece of paper with a coffee stain on it and the ball bumped into the stain. Awesome!

The New iPod Nano Shoots Video, Plays Radio

Posted by 1337g33k on September 9, 2009

Gizmodo:

“As well-documented by the “word on the street,” the fifth generation iPod nano is also a video camera…and radio and a pedometer and a voice recorder too…and it’s available today. Details:

• Video camera (640×480)
• Integrated mic
• Integrated speaker
• FM Radio
• One-click YouTube uploads
• Voice Over like Shuffle
• Pedometer with Nike+ syncing online
• Voice Recorder
• 2.2-inch screen is possibly larger than last model

Starting today, the 8GB nano will cost $150 while the 16GB comes in at $180. (So why buy the 8?) What’s the biggest surprise here? The camera we knew about. But the radio? The video support? I do have to admit, if it’s this or a Flip, the nano is certainly more tempting.”

iPod Touch Third Generation: Now Up to 64GB

Posted by 1337g33k on September 9, 2009

Shew, managed to avoid iPod lust this year….they didn’t add the camera to the Touch after all!

Gizmodo:

“As expected, the iPod touch third generation is here. It comes in 16, 32, and 64 GB—for $199, $299, and $399. The new 32 and 64GB version has a faster processor, 50% faster. Just like the iPhone 3GS.

Also like the iPhone 3GS, the graphics processor in the new iPod touch has OpenGL ES 2.0 capability. No wonder they are pushing so much on the gaming front.

No sight of the rumored camera. A lot of case manufacturers are going to spend a lot of time fixing holes.”

According to AT&T, a software update will be released that day which will enable MMS capabilities. The service will be enabled for current iPhone plan subscribers on AT&T’s network at no additional charge for users with a monthly text messaging plan.

A&T explains that the MMS launch was delayed while they prepared over the last several months. As they put it, “We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network.”

Apple announces ‘Rock and Roll’ event on Sept. 9

Posted by 1337g33k on August 31, 2009

Here come the new iPods (with camera?)….

iLounge:

“Apple has sent out invitations to select members of the media inviting them to a special event on September 9th. Featuring a large iPod silhouette graphic at the top sporting the phrase “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it,” the invite states that the event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, CA, and that it will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Apple is widely expected to announce its fall 2009 iPod lineup at the event, and iLounge will be there to cover it live.

Notable is the “only rock and roll” reference, which appears to be a simultaneous dismissal of rumors that the event might be focused on more than just Apple’s “music” business—iPods—and a reference to the Rolling Stones, who traditionally were seen as rivals to The Beatles. The September 9 date of the event coincides with the release of The Beatles’ entire backcatalog in remastered CD format, as well as a widely publicized tie-up for a special Beatles version of the game Rock Band; these events, combined with Apple’s longstanding interest in offering The Beatles’ catalog in digital format on iTunes, have led many to speculate that the event would include such an announcement. If so, the theme of the invitation provides only the most modest hint that such a thing could be possible.”
