NetShare app re-appears on iTunes Store

1 08 2008

iLounge:

NetShare, a new iPhone application for sharing your phone’s cellular internet connection over Wi-Fi, has reappeared on the App Store following its removal last evening. It is unclear if Apple has decided to let sales of the application proceed, or if this is simply a brief reappearance due to a glitch. NetShare is available through the App Store via this direct link and sells for $9.99.

1Password Makes Secure Logins Easier on Iphones / Touches

31 07 2008

Lifehacker:

1password_scaled.jpg

“iPhone/iPod touch only: Free application 1Password makes logging into secure sites much easier on the iPhone’s mobile Safari browser by creating a double-protected mini-database of your passwords. The app won’t auto-fill login forms in Safari, but provides its own mini-browser that plugs in your credentials into any site’s login form. Great for checking your bank accounts or secure work data, but the big drawback is lack of a keyboard inside the mini-browser—so no further typing once you’re in. Of course, you can just use 1Password as a memory-booster for your user/password combos, for which it works just fine. Users of 1Password’s Mac version can sync their passwords between versions with the $35 upgrade. 1Password is a free download for iPhones and iPod touch devices only.”

Lifehacker:

“iPhone/iPod touch only: Free application Here I Am uses your location-aware iPhone to pinpoint your position and share your whereabouts with a link to a Google Map. It’s a very simple application, but the concept—that you can quickly email your location to any contact to help them find you—is very helpful. Just fire it up, let it locate you within a reasonable level of accuracy, and when you’re happy with it, hit the email button. Straightforward but effective. Here I Am is freeware, requires an iPhone or iPod touch running the 2.0 software.”

Perform Site Searches with the Google Mobile App

29 07 2008

Lifehacker:

“iPhone/iPod touch only: The Google Mobile app has a hidden secret
that can save tons of time looking up web pages on your iPhone: an
undocumented shortcut that performs Google site searches. Let’s say,
for example, you want to read our original post on the Google Mobile iPhone app.
Just fire up Google Mobile on your iPhone or iPod touch and start
typing in Lifehacker until the Lifehacker homepage shows up in the
search results. Then just touch and hold down on that result for a
second or so, until the selection flashes. You’ll notice that the
search box now lists lifehacker.com in a small blue box.

site-searching.pngNow
all subsequent text you search will perform a Google site search (which
you can do from a regular Google search box by typing site:lifehacker.com 'search terms').
This trick works for any web site, meaning you can skip loading a web
site in Safari if you just want to use its search box; use the Google
Mobile app’s site search trick for much quicker results. For more
Google Mobile for iPhone tricks, check out how to use Google Mobile for quick local lookups.”

iPhone 2.1 firmware beta in test, new GPS features!

25 07 2008

iphonefreakz:

“Apple has released a beta version of iPhone OS 2.1 to developers. Along
with the 2.1 firmware, a new version of the iPhone SDK has been seeded
as well, but the new SDK can’t be used for submitting applications to
the App Store at the moment.

A few new things we are seeing in this version of the software is the
addition of a bunch of Core Location features that track the direction
you are heading, and the speed you are traveling. Looks like we might
see a turn-by-turn GPS app after all on the iPhone 3G.”

Use Google Mobile for the iPhone for Quick Local Lookups

24 07 2008

Lifehacker: “Over at the Google Mobile Blog I’ve put together a step-by-step video detailing how I use the previously mentioned Google Mobile app
on my iPhone to do quick local look-ups. The concept is simple: Since
the Google Mobile app has a built-in local option for searching nearby,
I fire up Google Mobile whenever I need to look up an address or phone
number, enter what I’m looking for, and launch up the local search. You
can do the exact same thing through Google Maps on the iPhone, but
using Google Mobile cuts out a step and gives you all the other Google
Mobile search options to boot. Jump through to the Google Mobile post
to see if the iPhone 3G will blend (spoiler: it can).”

Apple Launching App Store Beta Program

24 07 2008

Must be tired of apps crashing the iphone…

Digg: “Apple is finally going to start rolling out a new beta program in the
next few days. Details are slim, but it seems like Apple is capping the
total number of beta participants at 100 per app. In order to download
a beta app, users will need to submit their iPhone’s SN to the
developer, who will then need to flag its eligibility in the store
itself.”

Beware iPhone App Scams

21 07 2008

Digg: “If you Google “iPhone apps,” the first thing that comes up is
iPhoneApps.org, a site selling a bundle of “top 10″ iPhone applications
for $25 using “safe PayPal.” Friends, there’s nothing safe about this
site. It’s a scam. The iTunes App Store is the exclusive distributor of
iPhone apps, period. Don’t get your apps anywhere else. Tell your
friends…”
