Frozen Han in carbonite ice-mold

13 05 2008

Boing Boing:

“I’m skeptical about a “talking R2D2 ice bucket,” but I’m utterly sold
by the fact that it comes with a Han Solo Frozen in Carbonite ice-cube
mold! Now that’d be a classy cocktail!”

Return of the Moon-Nazis in Creative Commons-licensed film from Star Wreck creators

7 05 2008

Boing Boing: “John Buckman from Magnatune sez,

I’m involved with a film project called “Iron Sky”, which released a 2 1/2 minute teaser today:

“In 1945 the Nazis fled to the moon. It’s 2018, and now they’re coming back”

What makes this interesting is that it’s the second film by the people who made Star Wreck,
which is the most successful feature-length Internet-distributed film
of all time. Star Wreck was made by 3000 people, has been download 8
million times, is under a CC by-nd-nc license, and made good money both
through DVD sales, and through an eventual deal with Universal.

My role in this is that I provided the seed funding for Iron Sky, and I’m head of the board of wreckamovie.com
– a collaborative film-making web site (also CC based), that was built
from the Star Wreck experience (and is being used to make Iron Sky)

Video of the motorized R2-D2 projector in action (omg)

2 05 2008

I admit, I drooled over this too….

Digg: “We knew that there was a motorized, fully-articulated R2-D2 projector
with built-in DVD, iPod dock, all kinds of digital media inputs, and
Millennium Falcon remote control, but we never—EVER—imagined it would
be so amazingly drooltastic as this video shows.” I can’t believe this.

Spielberg loves GHOST IN THE SHELL… so much so he wants Dreamworks to do it up live-action style!

15 04 2008

AICN: “So, a story popped up on Variety this morning announcing that Dreamworks has nabbed the rights to do-up famous anime GHOST IN THE SHELL as a live action (and 3D) feature film.

The interesting part is that it was Spielberg himself who spearheaded the acquisition.

Avi and Ari Arad are attached to produce and took the project around, where it found its way to Spielberg who urged it to be brought into the fold at Dreamworks.

The plan is indeed to make it a 3D film, live action and STREET KINGS’ Jamie Moss is attached to script the adaptation. No word yet on director.

I’m no anime fan, but you don’t have to be one to love GHOST IN THE SHELL. It’s one of the titles that reaches across genre lines. Curious to see how they handle the project… It’d be amazing if they kept the movie adult (read R-rating), but released it still as 3-D experience. We’re getting some horror films in 3-D, which is cool, but I’d love to see a violent, big time sci-fi flick in 3D as well. You?”

Fox Network Orders Sci-Fi Pilot Movie From GALACTICA Vets Ron Moore & Michael Taylor

14 04 2008

Being on Fox means it’ll be canceled after the first episode…

AICN: “Battlestar Galactica” writer-producers Ron Moore and Michael Taylor are headed back to outer space for a newly greenlit Fox Network TV-movie pilot titled “Virtuality.”

Variety describes it thusly:

Universal Media Studios is behind the sci-fi drama, which follows 12 astronauts who are sent on a 10-year journey to find a distant solar system. The explorers pass the time by hooking up to advanced virtual reality modules to explore self-created worlds. But they discover someone has downloaded a computer bug into the system — and one of them may be the saboteur.

NBC passed on the project. “Insiders said was too sci-fi for Peacock tastes,” according to Variety, even though NBC is the network behind “Heroes,” “Bionic Woman” and a new “Knight Rider” series due this autumn.

Moore also wrote the SciFi Channel’s “Galactica” prequel pilot movie “Caprica,” which shoots this spring.

If “Virtuality” goes to series, it could air on Fox early next year.

Firefly Tea - a shiny brew.

10 04 2008

Whedonesque: “‘Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand. I don’t
care…’ I’ve my tea! Inspired by the fabulous Joss Whedon’s sci-fi
show, this tea is a mixture of all things a gunslinging space cowboy
(or girl) could want. The smoky kick of gunpowder, the elegant softness
of mandarin oranges and just a hint of the wild, but sweet, side of
life. A perfect brew for all the browncoats out there!”
