In Depth: Pandora’s Streaming Radio App for the iPhone

12 07 2008

Wired:
Iphonenowplaying
“Pandora has unleashed an iPhone version of their interactive internet radio service that moves beyond what has previously been possible in the portable radio arena. As soon as Pandora heard that Apple would be launching the App Store, its designers and engineers began working on an iPhone version of Pandora using Apple’s apparently excellent SDK.

iPhone OS 2.0 Unlocked

11 07 2008

Wow, that didn’t take long….

Gizmodo:

“The new iPhone OS 2.0 software has been unlocked and jailbroken. It was released just hours ago and it has already been cracked by the iPhone Dev Team. The first one took a couple of months, but this one was actually unlocked before Apple released it to the public. And you have had the proof in front of you all morning.

If you were wondering how I was doing push email tests
on iPhone OS 2.0 and Vodafone UK, this is the reason why. The code
wizard commandos at the iPhone Dev Team have been working on this
non-stop since the early days of beta testing. In fact, I had iPhone OS 2.0 running on my iPhone since last week. That was version 5A345, two below 5A347, but identical in functionality.

Now that the official iPhone OS 2.0 is out, the iPhone Dev Team will
release their Pwnage tool for everyone to unlock and jailbreak their
iPhones soon, although the specific date/time is not firm yet. It may
not be as interesting as before—since most countries now have the
iPhone and it will be impossible to buy without doing a contract
first—but people looking to install unsigned applications and buy
pay-as-you-go cards while traveling—instead of roaming—will find it
very useful.

And besides, we don’t get tired of seeing the Death Star exploding again and again.”

What’s Good (and Free!) in the iTunes App Store

10 07 2008

Lifehacker:

“More than 550 new applications arrived for the iPhone and iPod touch this morning in iTunes’ brand new App Store
and more than 130 of them are available for free. This morning we’re
taking a look at the best free applications for your iPhone and iPod
Touch, available after the 2.0 software update officially arrives (or
after you’ve grabbed the unofficial update). Check out our list after the jump—and check back throughout the morning, as we’ll be updating it with more picks as we find them.

Note:
Most of the apps listed here work with both iPhones and iPod touch
models, but we’ve noted where an app requires the iPhone’s voice, SMS,
or GPS capabilities to run.”

iPhone firmware 2.0 is live (plus hands-on)

10 07 2008

Engadget:

That’s right. If you’ve been dying for a round of Super Monkey Ball,
now’s your chance. The firmware is available only through a direct
link, not iTunes, so if you want it, follow the read link to sweet,
succulent 2.0 paradise. We’re loading it up as we speak, so we’ll let
you know what’s good ASAP.

Update:
Okay, all systems are go! Updating with pics after the break. We’re
installing AIM and some other apps on to test — will have photos in
just a moment.

Update 2: Looks like our upload of Super Monkey Ball caused iTunes to crash out! We’ve got the wheel, folks.

Update 3:
Alright, we’ve got it syncing again — but it’s taking forever. Hard to
tell if this is due to apps uploading or not. It’s like watching paint
dry.

Update 4:
Our bad — music was syncing.
Apps are up and running smoothly — take a look at the new batch of
pics in the gallery below. Also, the update has been tested on both a
jailbroken and non-jailbroken phone and it’s working as it should.”

Apple’s Remote: turns your iPhone into a WiFi remote control

10 07 2008

Engadget:

“There it is, the new freebie from Apple which turns
your iPhone or iPod touch into a remote control. It works with Apple TV
and iTunes over the WiFi network to play, pause, skip and shuffle your
songs stored in your iTunes library. You get access to playlists, album
art (displayed in the Remote app), control over AirTunes speakers, and
the ablity to search your entire library. No video support apparently
but free is free and 1.0 is 1.0.

Update: Looks
like Apple has updated Apple TV to 2.1 with support for the new remote
app, along with support for MobileMe. Get it via your Apple TV’s Update
Software feature.”

Apple App Store now live!

10 07 2008

Engadget:

The App Store is live,
and we’re taking a peek around before it implodes from curious users
trying to download dozens of apps for their iPhones and iPods touch (or
is that iPod touches?).

Already
users can start downloading their programs (which are downloaded to
their /Users/[user]/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications/ directory as .ipa
files), but you can’t do anything with them until you get the 2.0
firmware (or an iPhone 3G).

So far everything is really smooth
and easy to use, although it’s easy to tell that the enormous amount of
applications that will be available in the coming months (and years)
will become a difficult thing to trudge through. It’s a high-class
problem for Apple, but hopefully it won’t be too overwhelming to find
something good if you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for.

We’ll be keeping tally of some of the more noteworthy launch apps, although many we’ve already seen:

  • AIM - duh
  • Google Mobile - “a great place to start your search”
  • Twitterrific - Finally, a legit, standalone Twitter client
  • Bomberman Touch
  • Epocrates Rx - An app to help identify “mystery pills” you might find. Very helpful.

We’ll be updating with more info as we go!”

Update: Screenshot of iTunes 7.7 Remote control configuration screen (warning: it’s not much) added after the break.

Update 3: According to MacRumors, 7.7 also appears to add Nike+ integration for the iPhone — a move long rumored and now seemingly confirmed.”

PassPack Enables Offline Password Management with Gears

9 07 2008

Lifehacker:

passpack_offline.jpg

“Windows/Mac/Linux (Firefox or IE7): PassPack, an online manager for both your computer and web site passwords we’ve previously mentioned, has created an offline version using Google’s Gears add-on. That alone makes PassPack a more useful tool, but you can also download PassPack onto multiple computers, online or off, and sync your password management between them all (assuming the offline computers can make a one-time connection). As Adam noted, the site goes a long way to explain its encryption and privacy measures; if that sounds kosher to you, its offline version makes PassPack much more helpful. Fans of Adobe Air apps should check out PassPack’s “Desktop” AIR app. PassPack’s offline version requires Google Gears, which runs on Firefox and Internet Explorer; hit the link below for installation instructions.”

G-Park iPhone App Lets the Forgetful Bookmark Their Car

8 07 2008

I need this app badly…

Gizmodo:

“Park
your car and tap “Park Me” to take a GPS reading; on the way back, hit
“Where Did I Park” for turn-by-turn directions back to the whip. It’ll
work for first-gen and iPod touch users (although not as well, I would
imagine) via Wi-Fi and cell-tower positioning but 3G users will get
turn-by-turn directions via GPS. Sure, you could just drop a pushpin in
Google Maps, but part of the charm of these apps is going to be the
simple execution of simple ideas, Xbox Live Arcade style. I recommend
just remembering where you’ve parked.”

DesktopOnTop Provides System Tray Access to Desktop Items

7 07 2008

Lifehacker:

desktop_on_top2.png

“Windows only: Free Windows utility DesktopOnTop adds an icon to your system tray that provides quick access to the files and shortcuts on your desktop, in either a pop-up list or a mini-desktop view. The right-click list isn’t all that much more convenient than the “Desktop” toolbar that Windows itself provides, but the ordered desktop view is a boon for those who stack and filter their files on their background. The major drawback to DesktopOnTop is that its mini-desktop’s wallpaper won’t match yours (unless you cede your wallpaper to one of its designs), but color-picking and transparency settings can make it unobtrusive. DesktopOnTop is a free download for Windows systems only.”
