Portal 2 Hijacks Blue Screen of Death At GDC Awards

“Valve played it cute at tonight’s Game Developers Choice Awards, rigging up a fake Blue Screen Of Death during boss Gabe Newell’s time on stage. Course, it wasn’t just a BSOD. It also contained some cryptic Portal 2 marketing.

A poster over on Penny Arcade has cracked the code contained within the message (pictured above), a short statement from Valve (or GlaDOS!) buried beneath the jokes lying on the surface. Always pays to have someone able to translate hex to EBCDIC around at a time like this.

Their translation reads:

GLaDOS
A fatal exception (S) has occurred at (U)(S) : (P)(E)(N)(D) in (U)(N )(T)((I)) *
(L)(E)(E)(E). The current application will be terminated.

OnLive Launching June 17, $14.95 Per Month

“At the GamesBeat portion of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this morning, Steve Perlman, CEO of OnLive, finally announced details for the launch of the cloud computing gaming service. A year after the service was first unveiled at GDC in 2009, Perlman was able to point to E3 2010 as the official launch of OnLive.

June 17th is the date, and according to Perlman the service will be up and running in all 48 contiguous United States at that time.”

Google Maps Adds Bike-Friendly Directions and Trails

Lifehacker: “It’s long been one of Google Map’s most requested features, and now it’s here. Recreational cyclists and bike commuters alike can plot cycle-friendly routes, find trails, and avoid snarling traffic with Google Maps’ Bicycle layer.

Maps’ bike-friendly, green-toned map can be accessed in a few ways: by choosing “Bicycle” from the drop-down box below your destination when you’re looking for directions; by hitting the “More” button along the upper-right buttons, or heading directly to Google Maps for bikes.

The bike directions take a lot of factors into consideration when sending you around on your two wheels. Google looks for roads with designated bike lanes, tries to avoid areas with lots of hill climbs and drops, and, when possible, whenever a road has been designated by a city or cycle group as bike-friendly. In giving estimates on trip times, Google uses an average person at an average Body Mass Index level, peddling up and down the terrain.

More than 150 cities have bicycle-related information that Google has tapped into, and more are on the way. If you’re digging Maps’ new cycle features, or wish it had more, tell us either way in the comments.”

“Battlestar Galactica” is finding new life on the Web.

A year after the cult and critics’ favorite science-fiction show left the air, a multi-player online game is being developed that further explores the “Battlestar” universe, which is also continuing in Syfy’s “Caprica” television show. The game, which will be introduced at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this week, is set to be released worldwide in August or September.

Despite the crossover between the science-fiction and video game audiences, there has never been a major video game based on “Battlestar Galactica.” In 2007 there was a poorly received downloadable starship fighting game with the name but little direct connection to the series.

“We’re picking a point in the chronology of the series that fans are very familiar with to tell new stories,” explained Bill Kispert, vice president of digital platforms for the partnerships and licensing department of Universal Pictures, which owns the “Battlestar Galactica” rights and made the game deal. “There will be space combat as well as missions and exploration.”

Unlike traditional online multi-player games such as World of Warcraft that ship on discs and cost $50 to buy plus $15 per month, Battlestar Galactica is part of a new wave of games playable entirely in a Web browser for free.

In such games, which are hugely popular in South Korea and China and growing fast in the West, players can choose to purchase additional items such as weapons, costumes and access to new levels.

The Battlestar Galactica game is being published by Bigpoint, in which Syfy parent company NBC Universal is co-owner of a majority stake.

“With a browser game, you just get started when you launch,” said Nils-Holger Henning, chief communications officer of Bigpoint. “We can constantly add features and content for people who are playing.”
